Presidential Greeting

On 4 August 2017, the Alumni of the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Human Survivability Studies, Kyoto University (GSAIS/Shishukan), was officially inaugurated at Higashiichijo-kan, Kyoto University, and named “遊聞会(ゆうもんかい/Yumonkai)”. The purpose of “遊聞会” is to reunify the members after graduation, coursework completed without degree or withdrawal by deepening the friendship among members and contributing to the development of our alma mater.

According to traditional Japanese thinking, wisdom acquired by listening is referred to as “mon” 「聞」, while wisdom gained through thinking and reflection is known as “shi”「思」, and wisdom gained through practice is called “shu”「修」. The name of the Graduate school “思修館”is based on this traditional philosophy, a Buddhist term “mon-shi-shu”, on the other hand, after “聞(もん/to listen)”, “思(し/to think)” and “修(しゅう/to practice)” comes “遊(ゆう/to play)”. “遊” is referred to in Li-Chi as an activity to make full use of the acquired knowledge and play with it. In the world of Zen, there is a stage called “遊戯三昧(ゆうぎざんまい/to enjoy your life without being bound by anything)”. Expecting that the graduates including those who complete the coursework without degree and withdraw will rejoin the circle of 聞-思-修 even after reaching the “遊” stage, we name our association “遊聞会”.

It has been 6 years since the first students joined the Leading Programme of Graduate School of Advanced Leadership Studies, Kyoto University (GSALS), the predecessor of GSAIS, and graduates who have obtained the “mon-shi-shu” philosophy have started playing active roles in the real society. I believe that the establishment of 遊聞会 and its activities will contribute to further develop GSAIS. As one of the graduates I also would like to personally support to the education and activities of GSAIS/Shishukan.

Thank you again for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your Alumni Association President. I’m excited about the next two years, and hope 遊聞会 will be a successful platform to exchange views and enlarge networks in various fields among the members.

Best wishes,
Daikichi Seki
