On the 17th of July 2019 (Wednesday), Ms. Akiko Taguchi (Director, International Labour Organization (ILO) Office for Japan) was invited to Kyoto University’s Higashi Ichijo-Kan Building, Lecture Room (201) as a lecturer of the international education seminar entitled “ILO as your course: The Centenary -1919-2019-” for GSAIS and all other students.

Ms. Taguchi looked back on the history of the ILO, which has reached its 100th anniversary this year, and explained the current activities of the ILO under its four pillars, including “work creation”, “work rights protection”, “social protection”, and “social dialogue promotion”, and its strategy of gender equality. She also touched upon a mechanism to realize the norms related with labour issues in real life society and a new initiative of ILO, “the future of work” for the next 100 years.

At the same time, for students thinking of an international organization as a future course, Ms. Taguchi introduced the ILO staff recruitment and internship system.

The attendees reaffirmed the ILO’s work and importance through the lecture, and were able to realize that they could discover the possibility of tackling development issues in a “work” perspective.
