世界の物質は全て原子、分子、つまり化学で成り立っています!
けれども、化学が環境汚染を生んでいると、敬遠される側面もあります。

環境問題を考える場合、世界が何で構成されているのか、そして分解されたら何になるのかを議論することが大切です。ですが、そこに注目し議論される事は少ないです。サーキュラーエコノミー(循環型経済)とは、廃棄物を新たな資源と捉え、廃棄物を出すことなく資源を循環させる仕組みを言います。サーキュラーエコノミーは環境負荷が少なく、持続可能な社会実現に必要不可欠な考え方です。そのサーキュラーエコノミーを達成させるために何ができるのか、マクロとミクロ、両方の観点からグリーンサスティナブルケミストリー(環境に優しい化学)に基づき、研究しています。一緒に環境問題に立ち向かっていこう!という熱意のある学生を求めています。

理系で環境問題に興味を持ち、サイエンスで環境問題に立ち向かいたいと考える学生、または文系で環境問題に関心があり、最近サイエンスに興味を持ち始めたけれどもう勉強するのは無理だと諦めていた学生。皆さん、ウェルカムです。
文系に限らず、化学的知識の少ない皆さんにも解りやすく教えられる事が強みなので、一緒に学びながら世界に貢献していきましょう!!

(略歴)

2004年、水を溶媒としたエンジニアリングプラスチックのグリーンケミストリーに基づく製造法の研究で、早稲田大学理工学研究科から博士を授与(応用化学専攻 西出博之教授に師事)。その後米国に渡り、2005から2007年までマサチューセッツ大学のグリーンケミストリー研究所でグリーンケミストリーの創始者(Prof. John Warner)の下、研究に従事。2007年、Principal Investigator(PI)、研究室の主宰者として豪州モナッシュ大学に赴任する。2020年9月までtenured Associate Professor として、モナッシュ大学でのグリーンケミストリー、環境適用型ポリマー、プラスチック研究を牽引。2015年10月から2019年3月までJST さきがけ研究員(兼任)に従事。2020 年10月より現職。
創始者の下で学びそれを国際的に発展させてきたグリーンケミストリー専門家。
英国王立化学会フェロー。Secretary of the Asian-Oceania Green & Sustainable Chemistry Network (2009-)。Committee member of International Conference on Green and Sustainable Chemistry。

グリーンケミストリーとは?

みなさんグリーンケミストリーという言葉をご存知でしょうか?

「環境に優しい化学」等に言い換えられます。
化学物質を合成する(作る)人達が、環境に配慮してものを作るためにはどうすれば良いかを考える、現実的な化学の概念です。 日本ではGSCNがグリーン・サステイナブル ケミストリー(通称グリーンケミストリー)を「人と環境にやさしく、持続可能な社会の発展を支える化学。」と定義しています。

その考え方は人体、環境に対する害(リスク)を「リスク=ハザード×暴露」と捕らえ、今までの暴露を減少させる方法ではなく、根本の製品を作りだす時のハザードを減少させ、健康や環境のリスクを下げるという、ハザード管理型の考えです。
簡単に言うと、作ってから処理の出口をいじるのではなく、もの作りの段階でハザードの低い物質を使い、汚染そのものの発生を経つという考えです。

グリーンケミストリーの12箇条
1.廃棄物は”出してから処理”ではなく、出さない。
2.原料をなるべく無駄にしない形の合成をする。
3.人体と環境に害の少ない反応物・生成物にする。
4.機能が同じなら、毒性のなるべく小さい物質をつくる。
5.補助物質(溶媒、分離剤)はなるべく減らし、使うにしても無害なものを。
6.環境と経費への負担を考え、省エネを心がける。
7.原料は、枯渇性資源ではなく、再生可能な資源から得る。
8.途中の修飾反応はできるだけ避ける。
9.できるかぎり触媒反応を目指す。
10.使用後に環境中で分解するような製品を目指す。
11.プロセス計測を導入する。
12.化学事故につながりにくい物質を使う。

研究テーマの例

1.サーキュラーエコノミー、プラスチックリサイクルの文理融合研究

サーキュラーエコノミー(循環型経済)とは、廃棄物を新たな資源と捉え、廃棄物を出すことなく資源を循環させる仕組みを言う。プラスチックのリサイクル問題が注目されているが、本当にプラスチックはエネルギー的にリサイクルする事がベストなのか。多数存在するプラスチック各々には、どのリサイクル法が有意義なのか。ミクロの化学分子レベルの話から、マクロの統計学的な話までを統合させた文理融合の新しいリサイクル研究を進める。

2.易リサイクル可能な新規材料の開発

プラスチックに代表される材料は、環境負荷および経済の面からも、その廃棄物処理が問題となっている。近年リサイクル性を優先させた材料の研究が注目をされており、当研究室では、可逆的に、結合、分解が可能でリサイクルが容易な、リバーシブルポリマーの研究、及び人間の皮膚のように、自己修復性をもった傷が治るフィルムの開発を進めている。環境負荷なく分解、リサイクル可能なサーキュラーエコノミーに基づく新しい材料の開発を進める。

3.自然界由来の新規材料の開発

近年エネルギー問題並びに廃棄物処理の問題が取り沙汰される中、自然界由来のバイオマス、バイオ原料を用いての化学物質、材料合成が注目されている。当方が見出した手法の一つに、木材に含まれるリグニンと同様の構造を持ち、同様に酸化重合反応で合成されるポリフェニレンオキシドのラジカルによる水中・イオン性液体中の分解がある。この手法を応用し、リグニンが常温、常気圧に近い環境で化学反応により分解できる方法を研究している。また分解したリグニンから生分解性ブラスチックの開発も進めている。

4.海洋分解性プラスチックの開発

近年海洋プラスチック汚染が大きな問題となっている。その問題は単純に海洋に捨てられたプラスチックを海洋生物が食する事による直接的な被害から、分散されたマイクロプラスチックに有害物質が付着し、それが食物連鎖を介して生態系を汚染している等多岐に渡る。その主たる速攻性ある解決法は、プラスチックをゴミ箱に捨て回収する事を周知、徹底させる倫理、教育的なものとはなるが、グリーンサステイナブルケミストリーの概念から、選択的に海水中で迅速に分解する新規プラスチックの開発も進める。

5.グリーンサスティナブルケミストリー(GSC)の教育推進

化学離れが叫ばれて久しく、また化学物質が環境汚染を生んでるとも一般的には考えられている。世界は全て化学物質で構成されている事から、環境問題を解決するのもまた化学であると考える。グリーンサスティナブルケミストリー(環境に優しい化学)の一般・学生、子どもたちへの普及、教育をどのように進めていくべきかを研究する。

6.昆虫の資源化

現在の食糧、資源問題の解決策として、昆虫食、昆虫由来材料の開発が注目されている。サーキュラーエコノミーの基づき、いかに環境負荷なく昆虫を資源として活用できるかを研究する。

その他の活動

1. 企業との共同研究
今までにリグニン分解の共同研究を日本製紙が親会社のAustralian Paperと、環境適用型ペイントの開発をPPGと、光応答性高分子の研究を3Mと、採掘用高分子の開発をBASFと、農業散布用高分子の開発をNufarm Limitedと手がけた。生肉用パーケージ材料をMeat and Livestock Australia Limitedと、高分子膜の開発をANT Energy Solutionsと進めている。

2. GSCネットワーク活動
グリーンサスティナブルケミストリー(GSC)とは生態系に与える影響を考慮し、持続成長可能な化学、及び化学工業のあり方を提言する学問及び運動である。日本では、GSCネットワーク(GSCN)が2000年に組織され、2011年より現在に至るまで、公益社団法人 新化学技術推進協会(JACI)内の活動として推進されている。当方はGSCN内で日本と海外機関との連携、具体的には、Secretary of the Asian-Oceania Green & Sustainable Chemistry Network (2009-)として、アジア、オセアニアGSC会議の運営、他国際団体との連携、連絡を担当している。
