News MOU between University of Cambridge Center for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER). (January 17, 2023)

release date
January 26, 2023

Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS) has extended the mutual academic agreement (MOU)with The Center for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER),University of Cambridge, after completion of its first agreement concluded 5 years ago[1].

The University of Cambridge is one of the oldest universities in the world and is ranked 3rd in the Times Higher Educatioin World University Rankings 2023. It is based on the traditional British college system and is made up of 31 colleges. CSER is an institution within the University of Cambridge, established in 2012 and started research activities in 2015. It was founded by famous astronomer Lord Martin Rees and others to study human survival risks.

During this visit, Prof. Yosuke A. Yamashiki gave lecture on “Prioritization of Different Kinds of Natural Disasters and Low-Probability, High-Consequence Events – How to prioritize space-based disaster at our “Space Age” and establish “Three-core” concept”, by introducing the following publications[2].

In addition, Ms. Kiana Tomita, a graduate student of GSAIS who visited CSER as a candidate for international exchange researcher, obtained a master’s degree at Cambridge University’s Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. This also has contributed for the extension of the agreement and mutual exchange for the follow-up fiscal year starting from April 2023.

In November 2016, Kyoto university invited two researchers from CSER hosted by GSAIS, and had a lively discussion on various disaster risks[3]
In December 2016, Associate Professor Hiroaki Isobe (now Kyoto City University of Arts) attended the first international symposium held at CSER and gave a presentation. In October 2017, when Baron Leith visited Japan to participate in the STS Forum, discussions were held for the establishment of the agreement among Prof. Yosuke Yamashiki, Assoc. Prof. Hiroaki Isobe, and Prof. Kazunari Shibata (now Emeritus Professor). Both institutes agreed to hold the conference regularly, and to promote mutual exchange between CSER and GSAIS. From May 2019 to April 2020, Mr. Daikichi Seki (Post-doctoral Fellow at Kyushu University), who was a graduate student at the GSAIS, stayed University of Cambridge for a year as an international exchange program.

With the conclusion of extended agreement, (1) promotion of exchanges between graduate students and researchers of both sides, (2) promotion of joint research projects, and (3) promotion of publication were discussed. Extending the MoU will allow CSER to collaborate with the GSAIS on a variety of topics, including cascading natural risks, community responses, and the role of space technology in risk mitigation. increase. In addition, we plan to proceed with the agreement through visiting researchers and joint events from both sides.
