International Conference “Renewable Energy Development Strategy for ASEAN” was held at the side event of the 37th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (Bangkok, 2nd-6th September)

GSAIS organized an international conference named “Renewable Energy Development Strategy for ASEAN” at the “ASEAN Energy Business Forum” which was held as an official side event of the 37th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting on 2nd September. This event was held with a sponsorship of ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, headquarter: Jakarta) as a part of the 2nd East Asia Energy Forum.

In Southeast Asia, renewable energy development in the power sector has been gaining momentum recently, however, for whom and for what is the development in the first place? How can ASEAN countries find a strategy to develop renewables in the way they really want? There have been few discussions from such perspective.

This conference comprised of keynote presentations and panel discussions. Invited speakers and panelists include, Dr. Peerapat Vithayasrichareon from the International Energy Agency (IEA), Dr. John Crowley from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Dr. Tharinya Supasa from the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), Ms. Nguen Thi Thuy from the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority of Vietnam, and Prof. Tetsuo Tezuka from Graduate School of Energy Science in Kyoto University. Also Prof. Shigeki Sakurai, Prof. Shutaro Takeda and Mr. Go Okui from the GSAIS participated the discussion.

Two hours of insightful and exciting debate took place on various discussion points including the followings. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each different vision towards renewable energy development? What policy process would you expect to “leave no one behind” as aimed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs)? How can academia and international organizations engage with ASEAN to support renewable energy policy process? There were a lot of positive feedback from participants, for example, a participant said that the discussion was very interesting since it was made from new perspective that a participant had never been thought of. The detail of the discussion will be summarized and published as a working paper later.

In planning and organizing the event, Prof. Michio Hashimoto from Osaka University, Prof. Hiroaki Takashima, Prof. Tomonaga Yoshida, and Mr. Shun Yamamoto (3rd year student) from GSAIS made great contributions. Mr. Yugo Tanaka (5th year student) from GSAIS played a leading role in planning and organizing the event overall as a part of his PBR (Project Based Research) program.

Overall, the event was very successful in the end and it was very unique, trying to find a way to bridge academia and policy making practices to tackle with global issues, with a focus on policy process which brings an interdisciplinary viewpoint to the complex global issue of renewable integration to power system, which tends to be discussed within engineering or techno-economic framework.
