Graduate School of Advanced and Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS), Kyoto University has organized Second International Art & Science Symposium in collaboration with Goldsmiths, University of London. As one of the activities based on MOU (memorandum of understanding) exchanged in 2017 between these two organizations, the symposium aims to realize innovation in various areas by introducing “Art Thinking.” As an expansion of the first symposium, that focused such activities in academic area, the second symposium, with the title of “Art Innovation,” aims to focus innovative activities based on art thinking in industry and administration as well as in academia.
The symposium started by the greeting by Prof. Takara, Dean of GSAIS, and the greeting talk by Dr. Yamagiwa, Kyoto University President. Then there were two keynote talks; one is by Prof. Scott Fisher of USC, who is well known as a pioneer of Virtual Reality, and the other is by Mr. Azuma, who is with METI and in charge of 2025 Osaka Expo. In the two-day symposium there were various talks and events. Basis are the lectures by researchers of Kyoto University and Goldsmiths, and also by people from art area. In addition to these, there were presentations from five industrial companies that are eager to promote art innovation and also
reports on art related activities from Agency for Cultural Affairs, Kyoto Prefectural Government, and Kyoto City Government. Finally, at the panel discussion there was active discussion on how to realize art innovation in various areas. Also, during the symposium there were exhibitions invited and also selected artworks created based on the integration of art and science. It is expected that art innovation would become a trend in various areas including academia, industry, administration, etc.
