Do I always need to make a preliminary consultation with the Kyoto University Admissions Office (AAO) before applying?
All applicants who wish to enroll in the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS) must apply to the AAO, except for those who apply to the Graduate School of Informatics in the first stage of the examination. Please note that those who have graduated or are expected to graduate from a foreign university must inquire about their eligibility to apply, even if they are taking the examination for the Graduate School of Informatics.

By when do I need to submit my application to the AAO?
You must apply to the AAO, contact the faculty member you wish to have as a supervisor, and obtain their signature on the acceptance letter. We recommend that you apply to the AAO as early as possible.

Do I need to apply to the AAO even if I have already had prior consultation with a faculty member directly?
All applicants to the GSAIS must apply to the AAO, even if they have already consulted with a faculty member directly.

I live far from the school. Can I receive the letter of acceptance from the faculty member by email?
You can submit the acceptance letter received by email at the time of application.

Can faculty members from any graduate school or research institute be accepted as supervisors, as long as they are faculty members of Kyoto University?
First, please contact the AAO to discuss your research plan. If the AAO accepts the proposal, admission will be possible only after passing the general entrance examination. However, it may be difficult to accept a faculty member whose research does not align with your research plan or who does not have a system in place to support you.

If you wish to receive research guidance from a faculty member of the GSAIS, first apply to the AAO and contact the faculty member of your choice. A GSAIS faculty member will advise you on which graduate school and major to apply to, considering your field of specialization.

If you wish to enroll in the GSAIS and study in another graduate school or major within the university during your first two years, you must apply to the GSAIS, take the general entrance examination for the graduate school or major of your choice, and receive a passing grade.

I would like to apply to the GSAIS. Can I take as many examinations as I want if they are for different graduate schools and majors?
If you wish to enroll in the GSAIS, you may only take the examination for one graduate school or major that you select in the first round of the examination. You cannot apply to more than one graduate school or major.

I am an international student who wishes to enroll in the GSAIS. Is there a special examination for international students?
Currently, there is no special entrance examination for international students. All applicants must take the same general entrance examination. The general entrance examination is primarily conducted in Japanese, but some graduate schools and majors also offer examinations in English.

I live overseas. Can I take the examination from outside Japan?
The first examination must be taken in Japan, except for those graduate schools and majors that allow online examinations. The second examination will only be held in Japan, at the Higashi Ichijo Building of the GSAIS.

Oral examinations are given in the second round of examinations held at the GSAIS. Will the first round also have an oral examination?
Whether or not an oral examination is required in the first round depends on the graduate school and major you are applying to. For details, please refer to the application guidebook for each graduate school.

If I have a master's degree, do I need to submit both bachelor's and master's documents?
Please submit the degree certificate, academic transcript and other documents for your bachelor’s degree only. For details, please refer to the application guidebook of the GSAIS.

If I am accepted to the GSAIS, can I move into the training facility (dormitory)?
If you wish to move into the training facility, admission will be decided based on the available quota. If there are too many applicants, the decision will be made according to the results of the entrance examination. However, those who are employed at the time of enrollment are not eligible. Additionally, those who find employment while still enrolled after moving in will be required to move out. For details, please refer to the application guidebook of the GSAIS.
