The aging of the world population is one of the important global issues of the 21st century. While increasing the life expectancy of the world is a desirable trend, it is important not only to prolong the life but also to extend the healthy life expectancy.
In particular, how to maintain and develop subjective well-being (SWB) and cognitive function of the elderly people is a theme that attracts attention from all over the world.
Therefore, as a specialized study, my research explores the neural mechanism of the memory function (which is one cognitive function that changes with aging), via a cognitive neurological approach with a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) .
How I Can Apply What I Learn at Shishu-Kan
Applying Lessons Learned at Shishu-kan
Shishu-kan provides students with an amazing environment that allows them to concentrate on research for solving social issues which interest them. However, we have to transform this great opportunity to its application and practice. The keys for overcoming this challenge include “Responsibility”, “determination” and “Appreciation”.
In my case, as a student representative of the executive committee, we held a workshop which more than 100 people enjoyed. In this workshop, as a new form of activity, we proposed a brainstorming match in which students with diversified, comprehensive perspectives (and expertise), and members of leading enterprises formed teams to compete in forming new ideas and finding innovative solutions. When I saw them working, my heart was filled with emotion. Looking back, while the preparation period proved to be rough times, I was able to learn a lot from this experience and it helped me grow as a person. I feel very grateful to all of the members of the executive committee of the event and facilitators who have given me their support.
For the above reasons, I will always be grateful for the environment which enables me to work hard with highly motivated students, and would like to continue my effort to become a global leader who can contribute to the creation of a better aged society in the future.
